Turning your Common App essay into UC answers

By Ryan Jaffe ·

If you submitted a Common App essay on November 1, you have one more big writing job before November 30: four UC Personal Insight Questions. UC does not accept the Common App essay. But you do not have to start from nothing. Most students already have one or two good PIQ answers inside the material they wrote for the Common App. They just cannot paste them in.

Why you cannot just cut it down

The Common App essay and the PIQs are different shapes.

The Common App personal statement is a 650-word essay built to show who you are. It can be indirect. It can start in a scene, take its time, and land somewhere unexpected.

A PIQ is a 350-word direct answer to a specific question. Its readers are looking for the answer to the prompt, stated clearly.

So a Common App essay trimmed to 350 words usually fails twice. It loses the pacing that made it work, and it still does not answer a PIQ prompt directly. Instead of trimming, take it apart.

What carries over

The story. If your Common App essay is about the year you spent rebuilding your grandfather's boat, that boat might be the core of PIQ 3 (a talent or skill) or PIQ 6 (an academic interest, if the work taught you physics or engineering).

The details. The specific images, numbers, and lines of dialogue you found while drafting are still yours. The best one from the Common App essay can anchor a PIQ.

The cut material. This is the most underused source. Everything you cut to get the Common App essay under 650 words, the second example, the activity you could not fit, the paragraph about your job, is often exactly the right size for a PIQ.

What has to be rebuilt

The opening. The PIQ should start with the answer, or very close to it. A slow, scenic opening that worked for the Common App usually needs to go.

The structure. Build around the prompt's question. If PIQ 5 asks for the challenge, the steps, and the academic effect, your answer needs all three, in roughly that order.

The ending. A Common App ending can be open or quiet. A PIQ ending should leave no doubt that you answered the question.

A fast method

  1. List your material. Write one line for every story, activity, and detail from your Common App drafts, including what you cut.
  2. Map it to the eight prompts. Next to each line, note which PIQ it could answer. Some will fit two.
  3. Pick four with range. Choose four prompts that, together, show four different sides of you. Do not answer all four from the same part of your life.
  4. Draft each one fresh. Open a blank page for each, and write a direct answer using the material. Do not start from the Common App text and edit. Start from the question.

What not to reuse

Do not use the Common App essay's main story for a PIQ if it will make the UC application feel thin. If the strongest thing about you goes into one PIQ, the other three need to show something different. UC reads all four together, the same way the Common App reader reads your personal statement alongside everything else.

And keep the Common App essay's tone out. The reflective, literary register that works in 650 words can sound inflated in a direct 350-word answer. Plain is better here.

Where to go next

FAQ

Can I use my Common App essay for the UC application? Not directly. UC does not accept the Common App essay and uses its own Personal Insight Questions. You can reuse the stories and details, but each answer needs to be rebuilt around its prompt.

Can I shorten my Common App essay to 350 words for a PIQ? It rarely works. A trimmed essay usually loses its pacing and still does not answer the PIQ directly. Start each answer from the question instead.

Which PIQ does my Common App story fit? It depends on the story. A challenge story may fit PIQ 5, a skill or project PIQ 3, a subject you pursued PIQ 6. List your material and map it to all eight before you choose.

When are the UC essays due? For fall 2027 entry, the UC filing period runs October 1 to November 30, 2026. Check the UC application itself for the current dates.
