Why I do not use AI on a student essay

By Ryan Jaffe ·

Every piece of feedback you get from me comes from me reading your work. That is a rule with no exceptions, and I get asked about it more than anything else.

The reason is not that the technology is beneath anyone. It is that an essay written or smoothed by a machine reads like one. It produces competent, average prose, and average is the one thing an essay cannot afford to be when a reader has a stack of them.

There is also a practical risk. A student who did not write their own essay cannot answer a follow-up question about it, in an interview or anywhere else. The version that survives scrutiny is the one you actually wrote.

So you write. I question, push, edit and cut. That division is the whole method.
